"Gauby’s 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Muntada, which comes from ancient, pre-phylloxera Grenache (45%), Carignan (35% and vines over 120 years in age) and Syrah (20%) vines, offers a deep, complex and almost distilled essence of wild herbs, blackcurrants, tar, licorice, sage brush and leather on the nose. There’s no makeup here, and what you get is the raw essence of the Roussillon. Spending 30 months in a combination of large and small barrels, it is full-bodied and rich, yet very focused and tight, with a firm, structured core. It will need 2-3 years of bottle age to round into form, yet will have upwards of 20 years, if not more, of total longevity."

"One of the top estates in France, Domaine Gauby is run by the talented Gerard and Lionel Gauby. While I wasn’t able to visit with them on this trip, I was able to taste through a full lineup of their 2011s, from bottle, in Colorado. The wines are stunning across the board, with their new single vineyard releases showing distinctive, singular characters."

"The Gauby 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Muntada – as usual, from centenarian Carignan and Grenache vines plus a bit of Syrah – is pungently-scented with spruce resin, rosemary, leather, game, juniper berry, black raspberry and cassis, all of which figure on a firm, finely-tannic and grippingly concentrated palate, along with bitter hints of huckleberry and a suffusion of red meat juices and mouthwatering salinity. The combination of implosive density with buoyancy and primary juiciness is uncanny, though already adumbrated by other of the Gaubys’ 2011s, and reflecting their stated aims. This lean, bright, almost perpetually persistent and energetic rendition of Muntada should be fascinating to follow through at least 2025."
