95/100 Falstaff

"From an east-facing vineyard on pure conglomerate soils, picked on October 7th and vinified for 18 months in large oak casks (bottled in June 2018), the 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Ried Welles GSTK is cool, intense and fresh on the rather vegetal nose, with lots of gooseberries, blackcurrant leaves, pea and peppery aromas but not really any green flavors. There is just a tiny hint of oak here. Full-bodied, dense and round on the palate, the wine is dark, intense, firm, structured and fleshy in texture, with well-balanced richness and remarkable elegance. The finish is long, very intense and structured but also stimulatingly cool and fresh. This is a great 2016, and it reminds me a bit of Tement's Grassnitzberg (even though the soil is completely different: chalk-free gravel instead of limestone). Tasted July 2018."
